What to see in and around Marsala: cultural itinerary in Western Sicily

04 Jun 2022

Pearl of the Mediterranean, Sicily, has always been considered the cradle of Western civilization, as evidenced by the numerous historical and cultural testimonies that can be found scattered throughout its territory. Baglio Oneto dei Principi di San Lorenzo, Luxury Wine Resort in Marsala, is located in the heart of this beautiful region, strategically positioned to reach the most beautiful destinations in Western Sicily. Here is an itinerary in and around Marsala, departing from our 5-star hotel.

Marsala and its baroque historical center

Marsala stands on ruins that once belonged to ancient Punic cities. There are many sights to see: from the city gates to the old town, churches, and museums.

The first attraction not to be missed is the Mother Church, the Cathedral named after St. Thomas Becket. With its Baroque-style facade, the Cathedral of Marsala holds many precious treasures, such as 17th-century paintings, vestments, gold and silver liturgical objects, and several archival documents. The Mother Church is located in the beating heart of Marsala, namely in Piazza della Repubblica, also known as Piazza della Loggia. This square is considered by many to be "The Living Room of the City" and is the ideal starting point for our cultural itinerary.

At the end of the evening, returning to Baglio Oneto, you can admire the most beautiful sunsets in Marsala, one of the most striking natural spectacles in all of Western Sicily.

Trapani and its historical symbols

Let's move on to nearby Trapani, another must-see destination near our 5-star resort. This city is about 20 kilometers from Baglio Oneto. With a history thousands of years old - it is even mentioned in Virgil's Aeneid - Trapani is an actual open-air museum.

There are many attractions not to be missed in Trapani: the famous Clock Tower, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Church of St. Augustine with its magnificent rose window, and the riot of styles that characterizes the Anime Sante del Purgatorio Church.

Moving just beyond the old town, it is also worth admiring the Ligny Tower. This 17th-century fortress symbolizes the city and now houses a museum dedicated to prehistory.

Mazara del Vallo and its Kasbah

The last stop on this itinerary between Marsala and its wonderful surroundings is Mazara del Vallo, located about forty minutes away from Baglio Oneto by car. Although small in size, this city is home to many monumental churches from the 11th century and a historic center of unprecedented historical beauty.

The Kasbah, or the labyrinthine set of narrow streets that characterize the oldest part of the city, is not to be missed. With its narrow streets full of colorful paintings and the walls of the houses decorated with colorful ceramics and majolica, it immediately gives the impression of being in an Arab country.

Another symbol of Mazara del Vallo is the Norman Arch, the only remaining trace of a castle ordered by Roger of Altavilla and built after the liberation from Arab rule. From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding sea.

For those who wish to continue this itinerary among Sicilian beauties, it is also worth visiting the Valley of the Temples, where you can admire the traces of Greek-Roman civilization.

We at Baglio Oneto dei Principi di San Lorenzo are ready to welcome you to our 5-star resort in Marsala. We guarantee you all the comforts you need on your vacation. Enjoy the most beautiful sunsets in Western Sicily, and book your stay at Baglio Oneto.
